Research

Our original agreement, public announcements, documents of NGDA work, reviews of NGDA work, and related NDIIPP information may be found in this page. A series of internally and externally produced documents that continually track the processes and enlightments of our work is made available for review.

NGDA Interface
Globetrotter
Version 1.0

We continue to update interested parties as to the progress of the National Geospatial Digital Archive and works that influence it.

Our major sections of research and development have come in four groups:

Our principal goals for the second phase of the NGDA are outlined below:

___________________
Technical Architecture Objectives

Content exchange

  • Decide on an export format
    • Thoroughly document the export format
    • Focus on Archive portability- important to consider the 'emergency hand-off' scenario
  • Develop export tools

Develop Access (browse and search) Mechanisms

  • Improve NGDA Browser incorporating ADL middleware technology for true geospatial searching
  • Revise/Improve browse interface (simple browse directly into archive)
  • Implement initial version of federated searching in at least one of these interfaces

______________________
Format Registry Objectives

Format Registry development

  • Develop technical infrastructure
    • Architecture - polish, revise, improve existing software and processes
      • Ingest and update mechanisms
      • Browse and search tools
    • WIKI (community based website)
  • Reach out to knowledgeable geospatial community to populate Registry
    • Introduce WIKI in staged approach - UCSB >>> Stanford >>> NCSU >>>> Greater Geospatial community
    • Monitor format definitions and specs and ingest into FR when ready
  • Continue effort toward open spec with data format producers

_____________________________
Collection Development Objectives

Content Collection

  • Acquire content
    • ID content providers
    • Develop and administer collection development policies
    • Focus on content relating to east and west coasts of the U.S.
  • Ingest content into archive
    • Continue to develop and refine Archive Server as needed.
    • Continue to develop and refine ingest tools as needed. May include creating new modules for the ingest system, or creating/improving workflow tools.
